I found the book "Still Dancing" to be more than I was expecting. It was truly inspirational and clearly a much deeper and richer story experience then I thought I was going to get. The authors Gabielle Ford and Donna Rhine have presented the life experiences of a young woman along with her dog - who manages to fight back at disease, bullies and at times some emotionally stressing times in her life.There are multi-layered pieces to this book but the underlying issues are about self-confidence and overcoming roadblocks that keep getting thrown at Gabielle and her family. Certainly her mother is also a true hero in this accounting, as she had to deal with so many life tests from personal health issues to a suicide in her family - while being there for her own daughter's needs.
The issue of school bullies and growing up are the backbone of the book but it is so much more than just that. It is also about the love of a dog, friendships, family, hope and inspiration. Gabielle and her dog Izzy have touched so many lives.
I strongly recommend this book for all readers in the family. This book is one of those books that will make you feel better afterwards even though you might find yourself tearful while reading parts of it. I have nominated this book for one of the annual awards from "The American Author's Association". I believe that it is that good. Go buy a copy of this book NOW!

Gabrielle Ford, anti- bullying spokeswoman who appeared on such shows as Today wrote "Still Dancing" with Donna Rhine. And admittedly it is not a fun light hearted read. Its a story with considerable amount of tragedy. I saw the Animal Planet show on "Gabe" and Izzy several years ago (Gabrielle still finds it too painful to watch the episode ) and it had a powerful impact.
As a young gifted and workaholic ballet student she started showing symptoms of a incurable progressive neuromuscular disease at a early age. The tests came back negative. However, in a bit of soap opera it was discovered that the doctor got her tests mixed up with somebody else and the tests were positive.
As she attempted to keep her disease hidden as it became progressively worse, she lost her friends and found herself constantly tormented by classmates. This included the boy who would physically beat her on her thigh, as her single mother (her Father left the family when Gabrielle was a small child) tried to protect her and help her cope with her disease in and out of school.
It was only after high school that Gaberielle after overcoming many objections got Izzy as a coonhound puppy. The two were clearly meant for each other but as Gabrielle being fully responsible for Izzy's care and expenses, complications came as Izzy was found to have liver problems, requiring expensive treatment.
As that hurdle was overcame, other and worse trouble followed. Her beloved Aunt Joanne unexpected suicide, Uncle Rick's Cancer, then (one want to say "of course" by this time) her's mother cancer.
Even Izzy was found to be permanently ill with symptoms identical to Gabe.
What makes this book worth reading is throughout the book a theme of despite all troubles it is about a Family, most notably Gable and her mother refusing to indulge in balme or the least iota of self pity. Instead these are people who deeply care for each other, making a difference and are happy.
